Giancarlo Stanton’s two-homer day fuels Yankees’ offense in win over Cubs

Between injuries and offensive struggles, little has gone Giancarlo Stanton’s way this season. That wasn’t the case in the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Cubs on Saturday, though.Stanton carried the Yankees’ offense while enjoying his first multi-dinger game since May 12 of last year with two very different home runs. The first, a 118.1-mph solo shot in the opening frame, traveled 447 feet to the Audi Club in left field. The luxury seats, which are behind glass, hang above the second deck.Cubs left fielder Ian Happ took a few steps in reaction to the moonshot, but he quickly paused to watch the ball sail over his head. While Stanton’s initial blast had an expected batting average of 1.000, his second home run was the ultimate porch job. After review, Stanton came away with a two-run homer by lofting a pitch 322 feet to right field. He doinked the ball off the very bottom of the right field foul pole. Hit at 91.3 mph, the expected batting average was just .050.T...Red Sox Notebook: Alex Cora cautiously optimistic about Tanner Houck’s progress

Less than a month after taking a line drive to the face, Tanner Houck is healing, working out, and ready to start throwing next week. The 27-year-old right-hander suffered a facial fracture while pitching against the Yankees on June 16. He was fortunate to escape further damage, but the surgically-inserted plate will remain in his cheek for the rest of his life.Originally slated to begin the season in the bullpen, the Red Sox moved Houck back to the rotation when several starters weren’t ready for Opening Day. It proved to be a blessing in disguise, as the 27-year-old righty immediately and consistently proved himself. His 5.05 ERA and 4.42 FIP across 13 starts don’t tell the full story of his value this season. While his fellow starters began the season unable to pitch deeper than three or four innings, Houck has consistently gone the distance. In 10 of his 12 starts before his injury, he went five or more innings. Both of his last two games were against the New York Yank...Charles Manson cult follower Leslie Van Houten likely close to freedom

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s governor announced Friday that he won’t ask the state Supreme Court to block parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, paving the way for her release after serving 53 years in prison for two infamous murders. In a brief statement, the governor’s office said it was unlikely that the state’s high court would consider an appeal of a lower court ruling that Van Houten should be released.Gov. Gavin Newsom is disappointed, the statement said.“More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal killings, the victims’ families still feel the impact,” the statement said.Van Houten, now in her 70s, is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and other followers in the 1969 killings of Leno LaBianca, a grocer in Los Angeles, and his wife, Rosemary.Van Houten could be freed in about two weeks after the parole board reviews her record and processes paperwork for her release from the California Institution for Women in Corona, her attorney ...Man on scooter shoots randomly in NYC, police say, killing an 86-year-old and wounding 2 others
