SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Brandon Aiyuk’s time in coach Kyle Shanahan’s dog house is firmly in the past. The way the San Francisco 49ers offense has looked so far in training camp with Aiyuk outshining higher-profile teammates every day, he appears ready to have a breakout season and fulfill his offseason promise of having his career “take off.”“This is my fourth year in this offense,” Aiyuk said. “The work that I felt like I put in, and then also the success that I’ve had in the years, put it all together and that’s what you get for sure.”Aiyuk’s journey from a first-round pick in 2020 to being on the verge of stardom in 2023 hasn’t been a smooth one. He arrived in the NFL during the COVID offseason, limiting his practice time and ability to acclimate as a pro.He showed flashes as a rookie with 60 catches for 748 yards and five TDs in 12 games but didn’t realize how much work he needed to put in the next offseason and fell behind early in training camp...

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. Outdoor Colorado: Veterans learn rock climbing to help with PTSD There is just something about being in the outdoors that is freeing. And as far as AnnaKate Hein is concerned, the younger the camper, the better."A lot of these children these days don’t have a type of childhood that we think of as having like we might have had growing up — where you are running, free in the wild and unsupervised by an adult. Parents say, ‘Be back by dinner time.' Exploring the woods, crossing the creek, that kind of childhood," said Hein, the backcountry wilderness youth program coordinator at Highlands Ranch Community Association.Welcome to Camp Backcountry."If kids aren’t out exploring, tangible — you know, holding a frog, seeing a snake, catching a cricket — how are they ever go...

Historic staredown in DC court

In a courtroom showdown, former President Donald Trump and special counsel Jack Smith briefly locked eyes inside after sizing each other up.It was one of the storylines as Trump pleaded not guilty yesterday to trying to overturn the results of his 2020 election loss. The casual greeting made by U.S. Magistrate Judge Moxila Upadhaya when she addressed the defendant as “Mr. Trump” also caused a stir over the lack of protocol.“Every other president would have been addressed as ‘President’ not ‘Mr.’… Let’s be real,” Daily Caller’s chief national correspondent Henry Rodgers tweeted. The indictment charges Trump with four felony counts related to his efforts to undo his presidential election loss, including conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding. The charges could lead to a lengthy prison sentence in the event of a conviction, with the most serious counts calling for up to 20 years.Upadhyaya set the next cour...

With 36 runs total in consecutive games, it’s beginning to look like 1897 all over again for the Chicago Cubs offense

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:43:16 GMT

These are not your father’s Chicago Cubs or even your grandfather’s or great-grandfather’s Cubs. But in scoring 36 runs in back-to-back wins over the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field, they very well might be your great-great-great grandfather’s Cubs, who were then nicknamed the Colts. The Cubs hit seven home runs in a 20-9 win Tuesday and added five more in a 16-6 romp Wednesday. According to ESPN Stats, the last time the franchise scored at least 36 runs in consecutive games was in 1897, when the visiting Colts lost 7-2 to the Louisville Colonels on June 28 and rebounded for a 36-7 win June 29 — scoring 38 total runs in a two-game stretch. The Colts also lost 8-7 to the Colonels the next day, giving them 43 runs in that particular two-game stretch. Either set works, thanks to that wacky 36-run game. The Chicago Tribune’s account of the 36-run performance mirrored the Cubs’ 16-6 win over the Redson Wednesday. Like the Reds, the Colonels had inep...
