Presto’s Picks: Homecoming for U.Md., VT with routs served on the midday menu

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 13:23:39 GMT

Homecoming celebration is a dish best served at 3:30 p.m.Let’s be honest, students don’t always wake up early on Saturday mornings to show up at their best for a noon kickoff. And it’s nice to give the alumni a decent window to tailgate, from my friends Matt and Stacia at Maryland (shrimp dip with Frito’s, plus Coors Light to wash it down) to my pals Ray & Leanne at Virginia Tech (smoked turkey legs with Milwaukee’s Best) without giving them all day to graze. On Saturday, the Terps and Hokies begin the second halves of their seasons by welcoming back alumni in the midafternoon window, leaving exclusivity at noon for a sneaky/good matchup involving a local school (James Madison and Georgia Southern delivered a doozy of a game last year). You should at least expect a closer game in Harrisonburg than the noon quartet on the major outlets: On CBS, No. 1 Georgia is a 31.5 point favorite over Vanderbilt, while No. 2 Michigan is favored by 33.5 over Indiana on FOX (even the power of Gus ...

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warned that opening other fronts in the Israel-Hamas war was a “real possibility” as Israel intensified its retaliatory attacks on the Gaza Strip, sparking fears that the conflict would turn into a regional war.“With the continuation of aggression, war crimes and the siege of Gaza, the opening of other fronts is a real possibility,” Amir-Abdollahian said late Thursday upon arriving in Beirut, Lebanon, where he traveled to meet leaders of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.“I will discuss the situation in Gaza with the Lebanese authorities,” Amir-Abdollahian said. “Iran strongly continues its political and media support for the Palestinian resistance.”A long-standing backer of both Hamas and Hezbollah, Iran has denied any involvement in the surprise incursion into Israel by Hamas last weekend. The Iranian minister’s statement comes...

Seasonable Weekend, Mainly Dry

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 13:23:39 GMT

What a day we had yesterday with highs reaching the low 70s for some as some sunshine held on. Today, it’ll be another nice day, just cooler, as highs hold in the upper 50s and lower 60s, coolest in the Worcester Hills. There will be a little bit of a breeze too, aiding in that cooler feel to the air today. The weekend looks to feature mainly dry weather too as a seasonable chill wins out. Early sun fades behind mid to high level clouds tomorrow, then clouds fade to increasing sun on Sunday. Both days reach highs near 60. Any rain chance? A few showers/sprinkles are possible near the South Coast Saturday night and early Sunday morning, especially across the Islands. All and all, it’ll be a good October weekend to get outside and enjoy Fall activities/festivities. Early next week, it’ll be cool with a few spot showers Monday and a better chance for scattered showers Tuesday.
