DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The cost of building an artificial intelligence product like ChatGPT can be hard to measure. But one thing Microsoft-backed OpenAI needed for its technology was plenty of water, pulled from the watershed of the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers in central Iowa to cool a powerful supercomputer as it helped teach its AI systems how to mimic human writing. As they race to capitalize on a craze for generative AI, leading tech developers including Microsoft, OpenAI and Google have acknowledged that growing demand for their AI tools carries hefty costs, from expensive semiconductors to an increase in water consumption. But they’re often secretive about the specifics. Few people in Iowa knew about its status as a birthplace of OpenAI’s most advanced large language model, GPT-4, before a top Microsoft executive said in a speech it “was literally made next to cornfields west of Des Moines.”Building a large language model requires analyzing patterns across a huge trove...Saturday Forecast: Partly cloudy skies, breezy and cool

NEW YORK (AP) — Pets provide joy and companionship, but costs can add up quickly, especially if you're a first-time owner and don't know what to expect. Many prospective dog or cat owners only focus on the positive aspects of bringing a furry friend into their lives. Where to smoke the weed, now that it’s legal, seems to be the current preoccupation of the St. Paul City Council, whose members, had they been young enough, would have made their activist bones complaining about cigarette smoke and where exactly you couldn’t smoke them.Times certainly change. Around here, the times are changing at lightning speed. Just a few years ago, secondhand cigarette smoke was thought to be as dangerous as nuclear waste or a spill of strychnine. The state sued what came to be derided as Big Tobacco. A warm and dry summer may not have been the best thing for your scorched-brown lawn, but it was probably great news for little ruffed grouse chicks and the people who like to hunt them when they get bigger in the fall. The balmy summer, especially in June when grouse eggs hatch, appears to have increased both the number of grouse chicks that hatched and the number that have survived at least their first few months when they are the most vulnerable.A female grouse with at least seven chicks. Data from the Minnesota DNR shows about two-thirds of the grouse hunters bag each fall are juveniles that hatched the same year. When you first get into vaping CBD carts, you may get turned off by “non-natural-sounding” chemicals like propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG). However, customers will also notice that most CBD e-juices come with some percentage of these compounds. Heck, if you examined dozens of non-hemp foods and skincare, you’d see plenty of products with VG or PG.VG and PG are essential for producing vapor when you load an e-juice into a compatible vaporizer. When Original Gravity closed its doors in February, customers were left wondering why. The craft beer lounge on South First Street in downtown San Jose had been popular for more than 10 years and even survived the COVID-19 pandemic.“The industry changed for bars and beer,” said George Lahlouh, one of Original Gravity’s proprietors who also owns a piece of craft-cocktail lounge Paper Plane and arcade bar MiniBoss. When Original Gravity opened, practically nobody was serving that range of craft beers in downtown San Jose. Not only is that more common now, but local breweries like Camino, Strike and Clandestine have their own taprooms. SAINT-ETIENNE, France (AP) — Italy made a bonus point-winning start to the Rugby World Cup against a Namibia team that made the Azzurri sweat for every point at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Saturday. The 52-8 scoreline was Italy’s best ever against Namibia. But the seven-try victory with perfect goalkicking from Tommaso Allan was given a flattering sheen by three tries in the last nine minutes as Namibia finally flagged.First-game nerves, the baking sunshine, and the Namibians’ never-say-die attitude stymied Italy from showing its greater experience for the first hour.Namibia hooker Torsten van Jaarsveld’s yellow card gave Italy the break it needed to score two tries in the first 15 minutes. But when it was back to 15 on 15, Namibia grew into the game and scored its only try — an impressive team effort — and worried Italy well into the second half.Another lineout maul set up Italy’s third converted try for 24-8, and the backline finally clicked for exciting wings...Latest news
