ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- On World Turtle Day, which happens to be Tuesday, the Department of Environmental Conservation is asking drivers to "give turtles a brake," as thousands of turtles are killed each year by unsuspecting drivers. Turtles nest in May and June, and drivers may be unaware of turtles on the road seeking new nesting areas. Get the latest, news, weather, sports and community events delivered right to your inbox! If you find an injured turtle, the DEC says a licensed wildlife rehabilitator may be able to assist. The DEC also reminds people not to take turtles home, as all native turtles are protected by law and cannot be kept without a DEC permit.If drivers are able, they are encouraged to slow down to avoid hitting turtles, and if they can, safely move the turtle to the shoulder on the side of the road in the direction it was facing. Drivers are also advised to not pick up turtles by their tails, but safely by the sides of their shells. ST. LOUIS - St. Louis City locals may soon be faced with noticeable increases to their water bills.The details on this story are appearing in FOX 2's St. Louis Post-Dispatch partners. The Post reported that the increases being requested by city water officials would result in the largest hikes in city water bills in nearly three decades.Public Utilities Director Curk Skouby told aldermen in a budget hearing Monday that he needs two 20% increases in the next fiscal year. One this coming July and another one next January. LOUIS, Ill. - An East St. Louis woman who cashed in her dead mother's social security checks gets sentenced Tuesday.Darlene Rogers pleaded guilty to felony theft of more than $128,000 in federal money in January. WENTZVILLE, Mo. - Members of the Wentzville community put their support for veterans on display Monday. VFW Post 5327 welcomed hundreds of bikers traveling the central route of the annual Run for the Wall. Flags lined the streets, and supporters cheered as the bikers rolled in for the night. Laura Ricord is from Colorado and is making the cross-country journey. She said the support she has witnessed has been breathtaking. The run to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., is a way to honor those killed in action, call for an accounting of all prisoners of war and those missing in action, and help veterans and their families heal. “Society, in general, seems to forget some of the sacrifices that are made by the vets when they sign that contract, and they go overseas," said Michael Bischoff, a combat veteran showing his support.
