David French: The worst scandal in American higher education isn’t in the Ivy League

David French: The worst scandal in American higher education isn’t in the Ivy League Those of us who write about higher education can pay too much attention to America’s elite universities. Schools including Harvard, Yale and Stanford are seen as virtual cultural superpowers, and the battle over these schools is sometimes seen as a proxy for battles over the future of the country itself. It’s not that this argument is wrong, exactly. That’s why I’ve written about these schools. But it’s incomplete. In rightly ascribing importance to the Harvards of the world, we can forget that other schools in other contexts also exercise immense influence, and their virtues and flaws can sometimes be more consequential than anything that happens in the Ivy League.Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., on Friday, March 27, 2020. (Julia Rendleman / The New York Times)In fact, I’d argue that the moral collapse at Liberty University in Virginia may well be the most consequential education scandal in the United States, not simply because the details themselves are shocking and appalling,...

She writes: Get the latest news, weather, sports and entertainment delivered right to your inbox! Hi Jaime this is Annabelle and my dilemma has to do with me and my daughter. So her homecoming game is this coming Friday night, and I am not only an alumnus of the same high school but a former cheerleader. She is not a cheerleader but does attend games with her friends. So she asked me last night if I could skip homecoming this year because she’s going to be with all of her friends and doesn’t want me to embarrass her like I did last year which I had no idea I had done. I always paint my face for the game like I did in high school, and she was embarrassed by that. I’m not the only mom that does it, a few friends of mine from high school always get together for the game and paint our faces. I haven’t missed many games over the years and don’t want to miss this Fr...

Letters: Columnist Mark Kiszla leaves his own big footprint in sports world Mark Kiszla fansRe: “40 years of Mark Kiszla,” Oct. 15 sports coverageI sometimes “glance” at the other sports writers’ columns, but I always READ Mark Kiszla’s.— Larry McLaughlin, AuroraReading the retrospective on Mark Kiszla’s 40 years with The Denver Post brought back so many great memories. My family moved to Denver in 1963. My dad was a huge sports fan and a newspaper junky, and we always took The Post and the Rocky Mountain News. I remember my kid brother playing football with Dave Logan at Wheat Ridge High School, and going to games at Folsom Field in Boulder and Bronco games in the winter when it was so cold you couldn’t feel your feet, hands or face.As a young adult, I remember the only season tickets available back then were in the notoriously rowdy South stands at Mile High. I remember going to Nuggets games in the ’70s and wondering if then-coach Larry Brown would be wearing his velvet bell-bottom suit or his bell-bo...

Ask Amy: Single man wonders if it’s time to rekindle

Ask Amy: Single man wonders if it’s time to rekindle Dear Amy: My friend “Brian” passed away over three years ago. I was friends with Brian and his wife “Marcia” for more than 40 years.Prior to their relationship and subsequent marriage, Marcia and I were very close friends. We never dated. We just liked each other’s company and had fun “hanging out” together. After a while, she wanted more from the relationship, but I was not ready for a long-term commitment, and shortly afterward, I moved to another state to open a restaurant.I was very happy when Brian and Marcia married; they had a great marriage, and raised two beautiful and successful children. My conundrum is this: I am now in my retirement years, divorced, with grown children.I have been thinking quite often about Marcia, but I don’t know how to approach her to see if she has any interest in rekindling the old feelings she had for me. Over the years I regretted not pursuing her. I was too young and too stupid. Now I see it like this: Life is too short to ...

Serbia and Kosovo must work to de-escalate the situation in northern Kosovo

Serbia and Kosovo must work to de-escalate the situation in northern Kosovo  MEPs say the Serbian Government is pursuing a very dangerous policy with regard to Kosovo and its Western partners, in a resolution adopted last week, Plenary session, AFET.The text, adopted by show of hands, condemns in the strongest possible terms “the hideous and cowardly terrorist attack on Kosovan police officers by well-organised Serbian paramilitaries” in Banjska/Banjskë on 24 September 2023, and urges all sides to de-escalate the situation in northern Kosovo.MEPs are closely following the ongoing investigations by the Kosovan authorities and urge Serbia to fully cooperate and to bring those responsible for the attack who are currently residing in Serbia to justice, including facilitating their extradition to Kosovo.Dangerous policy of Serbia with regard to Kosovo and its Western partnersAggressive military behaviour, together with radicalised political messaging in Serbia and strong indications of the Serbian state’s involvement in the recent political violence in the north ...

49ers report card: Defense is atrocious but offense scores only 17 in second straight loss

49ers report card: Defense is atrocious but offense scores only 17 in second straight loss MINNEAPOLIS – Here is how the 49ers (5-2) graded in Monday night’s 22-17 loss at the Minnesota Vikings (3-4):PASS OFFENSE: FThis was Brock Purdy’s first game with two interceptions, and both came in the final 5 ½ minutes to torpedo a legitimate comeback bid. Kyle Shanahan complimented Purdy’s overall game (21-of-30, 272 yards) and he indeed was humming along fine. But that closing act was a crusher. Still, Purdy blamed himself for poor anticipation and a bad ball on the first interception to Jauan Jennings (who seemed a tad slow out of his break, but Purdy and Shanahan praised Jennings’ route). On the second interception by Camryn Bynum, Purdy failed to connect with Ray-Ray McCloud. Jennings and McCloud? Why them in the clutch? Because the Vikings’ halftime adjustment wisely took away Aiyuk with double coverage and forced Purdy to focus on the other half of the field. Purdy got sacked only once, a remarkable feat considering blindside protector Trent Williams did not play, so that a...
