PARIS (AP) — A spattering of protests were planned in France over the weekend against President Emmanuel Macron’s controversial pension reform, as garbage continued to reek in the streets of Paris and beyond amid a strike by refuse collectors. An eerie calm, returned to Paris Saturday after two nights of thousands-strong protests across the French capital, with one flash point at the elegant Place de la Concorde where angry protesters tossed an effigy of Macron into a bonfire to cheers from the crowd. Police dispersed people with tear gas and water cannons and there were hundreds of arrests. Protesters are trying to pressure lawmakers to bring down Macron’s government and doom an unpopular retirement age increase he’s trying to impose without a vote in the National Assembly. Further protests were planned Saturday in Paris as well as in the cities of Marseille and Nantes, but they were expected to be smaller than in previous days.In Paris’ 12th district Saturday, trash piled up meters...

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Republicans who are seeking to lead their party in the 2024 presidential race are gathering in South Carolina this weekend with a goal at the forefront of their agenda: taking on “woke ideology.”On Saturday in North Charleston, Palmetto Family, which lobbies for what it considers to be “biblical values,” is hosting Vision ’24, described by organizers as “casting the conservative vision” for the next White House race. More than 400 attendees are expected to hear from presidential hopefuls, including Nikki Haley, a former South Carolina governor who was Donald Trump’s U.N. ambassador, and tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.Organizers expect issues such as gas prices and national security to get plenty of attention. But there also is an expectation that much of the focus will be on the pushback by some across the U.S. against what they perceive as affronts to conservative ways of life by efforts characterized as “woke.” It’s pl...

"But I think it makes a very strong point."Asked whether Putin should be tried for war crimes, Biden did not directly answer, but said the Russian leader has “clearly committed war crimes.” Harris: US has determined Russia committed crimes against humanity in Ukraine The ICC earlier Friday issued an arrest warrant for Putin and another Russian official. Before you stick a fork in TCU, know this: The last time JaKobe Coles was asked to defend Gonzaga’s Drew Timme, he held the Zags star scoreless for more than six minutes straight.“We definitely don’t shy away from anything,” TCU forward Coles, Ball Arena’s late-night hero, told me inside the Horned Frogs locker room after his last-second teardrop cinched a 72-70 NCAA tourney win over Arizona State and shot the 6 seed into a Sunday tussle with the third-seeded Zags.“We’ve played the best teams. Back in February 2019, Timme was a 6-foot-10 monster at Ri...

California’s 2023 salmon-fishing season is off. But wild salmon, always wildly popular with restaurant-goers, will still find its way onto Bay Area menus this year. It’s a matter of when, from where and — perhaps most important for consumers — at what price? After reading the news this week, Mark Matulich of the family-owned Steamers Grillhouse, a Los Gatos mainstay for more than 40 years — checked in with his seafood suppliers.“If we do get any wild king salmon, it’s going to have to come from Oregon, Washington or Alaska,” he said. And once additional shipping and handling charges are taken into account, he’s expecting “a significant increase in the price of what we can bring to the table.”Fabrice Poigin, culinary director of the King’s Seafood restaurants in Southern California and at Valley Fair in Santa Clara, remains confident he can supply what diners want. “We will be able to carry wild salmon throughout t...
