DENVER – A mother and her newborn are healthy thanks to the quick thinking of an EMT on her way to class. Alaska native Bayli Jenski has been an EMT for four years and is now in Denver attending paramedic school. Jenski said she was riding her bike to class Tuesday morning when she heard a cry for help. “There was this older guy with a safety vest on standing there and he looked completely lost,” Jenski said. “Next to him on the sidewalk was this woman in the process of giving birth.” Photos: Pride parade turns Colfax Avenue into a rainbow road Jenski said she instructed the man to call 911 while she took action. “I throw my bike down, throw my backpack down and I’m at this woman’s legs,” Jenski said. “I grab this sweater and the baby comes out immediately." Jenski said the baby wasn’t breathing at first. “The first thing you do is dry and stimulate to get them to take that first breath and start crying,” Jenski said. “We train on that very frequently an...Toxic algae on Colorado ponds, lakes caused by recent storms and high temps

BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) -- Boulder Parks and Recreation has warned about toxic algae on area lakes and ponds.Algae blooms can rapidly appear due to high temperatures and excessive moisture after storms.“It is definitely gross,” said Brooke Anderson who visits area parks with her family. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment says algae blooms appear in stagnant or slow-moving water.“I bought my daughter a fishing pole for her birthday and I don’t think we feel comfortable fishing in this area,” said Chris Anderson. Why are restaurants sneaking in service charges? They say they have no choice While most blooms aren’t toxic, others contain cyanobacteria, which poses a health risk to humans and animals.Toxic blooms resemble thick pea soup or splotches of bluish-green paint. You should also avoid any foam that appears along the shoreline.Fishing may be allowed in some areas, but adequately cleaning your catch is required.“I think the county is good about notifying peop...Harrison Ford fights Nazis, age in ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’

With a fifth and presumably final time as the world’s most famous archeologist in Friday’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Harrison Ford proves he can “go home” again. The character of Indiana Jones was created by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas as the hero of a series of outlandish, somewhat comical adventures inspired by the 1930s Flash Gordon Saturday afternoon movie serials. The series began over 40 years ago with 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the template for the future franchise, giving Indy his fedora, whip and Nazi villains. Tom Selleck was their first choice but when he couldn’t be released from his “Magnum P.I.” TV series, the role went to Ford who had shot to stardom as Han Solo in Lucas’ “Star War.”“Raiders” charts a 1936 quest for a mythological ancient artifact, the Biblical Ark of the Covenant, which supposedly is able to make the army that possesses it invincible. That’s Germany’s nasty Nazis, who in “Destiny” are back in a big, big way. It’s 1945 Germany...Graham: You can’t miss liberal tilt of ‘fact checkers’

Conservatives on Twitter are mocking CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale again, especially since his Twitter bio explains his work as “fact-checking the president.” Fox News reported on June 16 that Dale hasn’t published a fact-check of President Joe Biden since March 30, and that was only online, not on TV. “Since that time, though, his database shows 21 bylined stories or on-air appearances that fact-checked claims made by Republicans, most of them by Trump.”One of the reasons you can laugh at the phrase “independent fact-checkers” is the obvious tilt in targeting. CNN may not be paid by the Democrats, but the target list makes it look like they are. CNN’s obsession over Trump always prompts the question, “Who is the president now?” Because CNN acts like Trump never lost. Biden simply isn’t someone powerful enough to evaluate.Biden can repeatedly suggest the Republicans are pushing “Jim Crow 2.0” — as if they w...What can be done to alleviate workplace burnout

A big project lands on your desk on a Friday at 3 p.m., and the boss needs it done by Monday morning. Emails need responses before the weekend, and you have to leave in an hour to pick up the kids from practice. You want to ask for help, but your co-workers’ calendars are as packed with color blocks as the Lego towers scattering your floor. You dream of a long vacation under the covers in a dark room, but you haven’t seen anyone take time off in you don’t know how long. You’re not alone.Nearly half of Dallas workers are feeling more burned out this year than in 2022, according to a new survey by consulting firm Robert Half. Tech workers, millennials aged 27 to 42 and working parents are feeling it the most. Most attribute burnout to heavy workloads (59%), but working conditions also play a role, the survey shows. One in 4 survey respondents (27%) say they lack sufficient tools and resources to work effectively and 1 in 5 (22%) want more communication and support from their managers.“As...Lovely & Kane: Mass. Caucus of Women Legislators tackling barriers

The 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote and hold office, was ratified in 1920. Just three years later, Massachusetts elected the first two women to the legislature. One hundred years later, 234 women have served in the Massachusetts General Court — compared to over 20,000 men.Today, women make up 31% of the Massachusetts legislature, and the 62 women who serve are all members of the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators. Since our 1975 founding, our membership has grown in size and diversity, and our areas of focus have expanded. While still a minority of the legislature, our members are a force to be reckoned with. They hold a variety of leadership titles and serve as leaders on policies ranging from energy to health care. Women are in an unprecedented five of the six constitutional offices, including Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll. We are honored to be co-chairing the Women’s Caucus for the 2023-2024 legislative session. Spurred by a robust job market, a growing number of young Americans are choosing to forgo college for the workforce. Politicians of both parties should welcome this trend and build on it — not least, by shifting resources from traditional college pathways and toward work-based alternatives that provide students with real-world skills.Last year, 62% of recent high school graduates were enrolled in college, the smallest share in two decades and eight points lower than 2009, when enrollment peaked. Some of that drop can be attributed to pandemic-era school closures, during which many college-age students abandoned their studies and never returned. Rising wages have also made entry-level work more appealing.Yet there’s evidence that many students are not so much rejecting higher education as seeking a better return on their investment. While overall enrollment in community colleges has plunged nearly 20% since the start of the pandemic, demand has risen for two-year programs that award ...Dear Abby: Doc’s bedside manner turns flirty

Dear Abby: Is it a problem that my doctor is a bit of a flirt? I had a procedure recently, and when it was completed, the doctor announced, “All set!” My reflexive response of gratitude, relief and optimism that the procedure would help me was, “Beautiful!” Doctor’s response to that was, “Just like you.”Now, that could mean “Just like you to respond that way,” or it could mean, “You are beautiful.” I don’t mind either way. But is this a problem that should be noted somewhere? It’s not the first flirty-type double-entendre. — Don’t Mind But Others MightDear Don’t Mind: If the compliment was followed by anything else that made you uncomfortable, you should have spoken up and told him so. He may have meant that you are a beautiful person rather than any physical attribute. Or he may say something similar to ingratiate himself to all his female patients. Bottom line: If you feel you must be o...Latest news
