Too much red tape or inertia?Thank you for the editorial from Bloomberg Opinion calling attention to the thousands of immigrants, refugees and U.S. citizens who have work experience elsewhere to whom we should turn to fill our huge demand (“Immigration can help solve the nursing shortage,” May 25). First step should be compiling local lists of them by skill set, like lab technicians, nursing aids, clinic and hospital nurses, public health officials, department managers and doctors. What paperwork or internships are required to hire them?Here in Minnesota we have hundreds of Afghan women and men who worked for the U.S. government, Scandinavian and Japanese hospitals, international NGOs and U.N. agencies. While they were still at Camp McCoy in 2021 a doctor who had worked for the U.S. until he fled with this wife and several children told how he was not allowed to practice in the U.S. even though he might help in the camp. ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - Tina Turner, remembered by many as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," is being honored through digital billboards around the St. Louis region. The tribute comes just a few days after Turner died from a lengthy illness at the age of 83. ST. LOUIS - A teen playing with a gun accidentally shot himself and a woman Friday afternoon in St. Louis, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. The shooting happened around 3 p.m. Friday in the 5900 block of Sherry Avenue in the Walnut Park East neighborhood. Teen walks two hours for 8th grade graduation in St. Louis Investigators say a 16-year-old boy had the firearm when it went off and struck him in the hand. A second shot hit a 37-year-old woman in the side. Both the teen and the woman were treated for minor injuries. They were the only two inside the home at the time of the shooting. A suspect has been arrested in a cold case homicide in Ignacio, the victim was shot as he was walking home on New Year’s Day 2009.Larry Fuller, 49, a father of four, was shot at about 2 a.m. after leaving a local bar, the Sidekick Lounge, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.David Hendren, 38, was arrested May 18 at the Navajo Nation in Arizona. Hendren faces a first-degree murder charge and is awaiting extradition to Durango where he will be jailed by the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office (LPCSO).In February, the Ignacio Police Department asked the CBI to take the lead in the cold case investigation, according to a news release. Recent interviews with witnesses led to Hendren’s arrest. The CBI, LPCSO and Ignacio, Navajo Nation and Southern Ute police departments have collaborated in the case.Fuller, a diesel mechanic, was alone when he was shot in the 300 block of Goddard Avenue, about three blocks away from the bar. State Farm General Insurance Company is no longer accepting applications for property insurance including all business and personal lines property, and casualty insurance, the company announced on Friday. The company says this decision, effective May 27, comes in response to “historic increases in construction costs outpacing inflation, rapidly growing catastrophe exposure, and a challenging reinsurance market.” “We take seriously our responsibility to manage risk,” a company spokesperson said. “We recognize the Governor’s administration, legislators, and the California Department of Insurance for their wildfire loss mitigation efforts. (KRON) -- Two people were injured in two separate shootings that took place across Oakland on Friday night, according to the Oakland Police Department. Three Alameda County employees charged with felonies in two separate cases OPD arrived at the 5900 block of International Boulevards around 9:45 p.m. after reports that someone had been shot in the area. Officers arrived on scene and learned that a victim had taken themselves to a local hospital. The victim was listed in critical but stable condition, according to police. Over an hour later, police were notified of a ShotSpotter alert in the area of 38th Avenue and Masterson Street. Officers found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound at the scene. They were taken to a local hospital and are listed in stable condition.
